Piper's Pit: w/ Guest: Frank Williams....from Columbus, Ohio
There's a reason why Rowdy Roddy Piper is a legend and this classic moment in the pit proves it. From what I understand, Vince McMahon wasn't completely sold on the concept of doing a weekly interview segment host by Piper. So when Piper got the greenlight to give it a shot, Vince tossed out a Saturday morning jobber to be the guest. What Vince didn't know was that by offering up Frank Williams - he showed Piper that he didn't have any confidence in the concept and gave Piper full creative freedom to make best lemonade with the lemon he was handed. As a matter of fact, he didn't make lemonade - he made pure fucking gold!
This treasure is considered the first pro wrestling shoot promo. It's the first time a wrestler took off on his own direction and exposed his opponent. Other than a face-off to build a storyline, when were you able to publicly take a big wet shot on someone in a promo. Sure, it's ONLY Frank Williams so there's no harm. It's not like he was making a career out of wrestling. But to look eye to eye with ANY wrestler and come off like, "Who the fuck are you and what the fuck have you ever done in this business" was stunning (for the early 80's).
You have your Hogans, your Flairs, your Andres...but Roddy Piper belongs right up there with the best of the best. Nobody did it better!....and nobody did it better while wearing a skirt!
